How to Bet on Football

A step-by-step guide for anyone placing their first football bet. Written by our editorial team — no jargon, no hype.

Football is the UK's most-bet-on sport by a distance. It's also the easiest to start with, because most markets are intuitive: pick a team to win, pick a scoreline, pick a scorer. This guide walks through the fundamentals in the order a first-time bettor actually needs them.

1. Choose a UKGC-licensed bookmaker

Every bookmaker we cover on this site holds a valid UK Gambling Commission licence — that's the non-negotiable minimum. It means your money is protected, disputes have a proper resolution route, and the operator is bound by safer gambling rules.

2. Understand the main markets

Match Result (1X2) is the classic — home, draw, or away. Both Teams to Score (BTTS) is a Yes/No market on whether both sides find the net. Over/Under 2.5 Goals asks whether the game will feature three or more goals. Correct Score is high-risk, high-reward. Bet Builders let you combine multiple picks in one game.

3. Set a stake and stick to it

Decide upfront what you can comfortably afford to lose. Divide that by the number of bets you plan to place. Never chase losses. UKGC-licensed sites let you set daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits — use them.

4. Learn odds formats

UK odds show as fractional (5/2) or decimal (3.5). Our Odds Converter switches between formats. Decimal is easier for accas — multiply all legs together and by your stake to see your potential return.

5. In-play vs pre-match

Pre-match betting is placed before kick-off. In-play (live) betting lets you back or lay outcomes during a game as prices move. It's fast — bank your maximum stake before kick-off and don't add money mid-match.

6. Accumulators — read the small print

Accas multiply the odds of multiple selections. One losing leg kills the whole bet. See our accumulator guide.

7. Stay in control
