Grand National
The Grand National at Aintree is the UK's most-bet-on horse race. A four-mile handicap over 30 fences, up to 34 runners, and a single race that decides a lot of once-a-year punters' seasons.
Each-way is almost always the right bet
The National routinely goes off with 30+ runners. A win-only bet is a tough ask. Each-way — half your stake on the win, half on the place — is the standard approach, and most bookmakers pay 5–6 places (or more, with "extra places" promotions on the day).
Extra places matter more than free bets
On the morning of the National, most UK bookmakers run extra-places promotions — paying 6, 7 or even 8 places each-way. On a race with 30+ runners, an extra place can be worth more to a punter than a free bet, so compare on the day.
Non-runner no-bet
Runner numbers get finalised only days before the race. If you bet ante-post, look for "Non-Runner No Bet" — it means your stake is refunded if your horse doesn't line up on the day.
Standing charges — read the small print
Some bookmakers pay each-way returns only if a horse finishes under its own steam and clears every fence — others credit place returns on the horse's final classified position. It's a detail, but it can decide whether a fallen horse still pays out on the each-way half of your bet.
